Healthy Lunches

Hi, This is RJ. The first week of school for me is going great. I have a good teacher and am back with my friends. As we go into the new school year we should keep in mind about being healthy.

One great way to be healthy is with our lunches.

Instead of buying school lunches all the time, you should look at trying to pack as well. How do you pack a healthy lunch? Here are a few ideas.

  1. Pack a salad with a turkey or chicken sandwich. Make sure to put your salad in a thermos.
  2. Make sure to pack a vegetable or fruit in your lunch.
  3. Different kinds of cheese make a great snack to. My favorite is Gouda.
  4. Pack water or a low sugar lemonade in a thermos instead of soda pop.
  5. Healthy hot food for your thermos could be things like chicken noodle soup, low fat spaghetti, veggie lasagna, or a low fat baked mac & cheese.

We do like to buy our lunches, so to stay healthy get a schedule and plan out what days to pack and what days to eat at schools. Speaking of that, I need to plan out mine. ;)

Look for lunches like sandwich wraps, salads, whole wheat meals, and reduced fat items. Of course we have our favorites, and you can get your favorites once in a while. Like Pizza day or General Tso's Chicken.

Another thing to do is plan a healthy snack for your snack time. A piece of fruit is great for a snack, also granola bars or real fruit snacks. Just make sure to look at the label with your parents to see which are best for what you like.

What are your healthy lunch ideas? Comment and let me know.

Also, don't forget to email your answers in for the 9/11 project.

9/11 Project

At Kids' News Ohio, we want to announce the launch of our 5th grade 9/11 Project . This year, we as a nation will remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and those who died on that terrible day. At Kids' News Ohio, we are trying to connect with as many 5th grade students as we can to find out what they know about 9/11. Why 5thgraders? Because 5th graders this year were born between 2000 and 2001. They are the first class of students that were born post 9/11 . We at Kids' News Ohio want to find out from 5th graders the answers to three questions.

  1. In a few sentences, what do you know about 9/11?
  2. How old were you when you first heard about 9/11?
  3. Talk with someone 20 years or older, and let us know how growing up after 9/11 has been different for you compared to kids who were in school before 9/11?

Please be sure to send in your responses by 9/9/2011. We plan to compile the answers and publish selected comments on the site, starting on 9/11/11. You may post comments to this blog or email us at
kidsnewsohio@gmail.com

Be sure you have your parents' permission before sending in. All comments sent in will be reviewed for possible publishing. Submissions will be published with the student's first name only. Let us know what grade you are in. If you want your comments to be submitted anonymously, please state this in your response.

Teachers, we would like to hear from you and your classes. I plan to post an article each week about a topic in the news. I would like to hear from you, if you have article suggestions or questions.

Till next week,

RJ

Back to School Suggestions and Links

Hi,  this is RJ with my newest article.

It seems crazy to get ready to go back to school already.

For most schools it's almost time to go back, and it is helpful to remember what you learned last year, so ask your mom or dad to go to a book store and buy you a workbook and do some pages each day, if you can, until school starts.

Then you need school supplies. You can order them online, or buy it from a store like Walmart, Target, or an office supply store. Stores in your area may have the list of what you need for your school. You can also check your school website for needed items.

Here are some online resources from the Ohio Department of Education you may find helpful:

Standard Guide for Families: this site tells you what you should know for your grade level by the end of the year – http://bit.ly/peqCVn

Practice tests for Ohio Achievement Tests – http://bit.ly/n3XgS9

Special thanks to the Ohio Department of Education for the link suggestions for this article.
